I am Ryan O'Hern, a journeyman whole animal butcher.

In my youth, while working alongside lobster fisherman, land managers, ranchers and farmers, I experienced a shift in perspective: Every moment is infused with death. Every breath I have ever taken is predicated upon the sacrifice of others (human and non-human). It is not possible nor desirable to disentangle myself from this. On the contrary, culling and harvesting can result in life giving, life promoting outcomes. The damaged earth and sea can be restored to health through well thought out husbandry methods. Though it will take the sustained efforts of many people working together, it is cathartic to do so. When we engage in this work, something beautiful and ancient is remembered.

"Human as keystone species" may not be specific enough as an idea. Yet, it is useful in that it draws attention to the larger, whole-system implications resulting from our behaviors. It reminds me that we humans CAN create incredible prosperity. When we reconcile and embrace our predation, we can channel it to serve the greater good.
