In this scene I am reminded of the complexity inherent in the killing of animals for human nourishment. Death is a somber affair. Worthy of great attention and intentionality. The care shown, and the sentiment this old lady voices, is where all of our heads and hearts should be.
The killing of animals is an unescapable fact of living on this planet. When we turn a blind eye to it we are not being honest or respectful. We can outsource the responsiblity of killing to others, but killing is still there. We can misunderstand the implications of monocropping vegetables and grains, but ideally we one day come to see that monocropping is the same level of tragedy as Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations.
Human agriculture is responsible for the destruction of many thriving ecosystems and the community of creatures who reside there. When done well, agriculture increases biodiversity. When done poorly, as is all to common, agriculture decreases biodiversity and undermines our planetary immune system. Killing is there.
When we kill sparingly, and with great intentionality and respect, the consequences are profound. Though this scene is sanitized a great deal, it reminds me of right practice.
